Fishing in 2021 - July- Kootenai River First Report
How is the Kootenai River fishing compared to 2020?
In a word? AMAZING!
The flows dropped early this year to very fishy numbers and we saw a June that gave up many nice fish. The recent heat wave has produced bugs and terrestrials that have the fish searching the top water. Today is July 10 and the dry fly fishing will keep your net busy most of the day.
Currently the flow is 9,752 at the Montana/Idaho state line. Water temps are between 61 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit.
Patterns that are working on top are the classics: Adams, coachman, mosquito and Chernobyls. Underneath we have been using soft hackles, zebra midges, pat’s rubber legs and hare’s ear nymph.
Treat yourself to a great day on the water soon by booking a trip with TLR. Lunch is included. Experience is not needed. We love to show folks the ropes to catching fish on a fly rod, both single and double handed.
